~ St Magnus Church, Lerwick ~

In 2009 – 10, Rab MacInnes, NGR Architects, and myself, restored the beautiful St Magnus Episcopal chapel in Lerwick.

All of the windows were removed as the stonework was restored.

One pair of exquisite windows were found, hidden away in a closed tower attic. They had been originally made for the “House of Charity” in Lerwick by Sir Ninian Comper, late 19th C.

They were removed, re-sized, enlarged, and installed within the tower attic, by Geoffrey Bell, Bristol, in 1973.

I removed them again, enlarged them again, and re-designed a third border, before installing them in the small Lady Chapel on the South side of the church. The new painted borders were based on other original borders elsewhere in the church.

I am really pleased with the result, and glad that the wee windows can be enjoyed once again.
