~ Royal Apartments Stirling Castle ~

Between 2009 and 2011, Rab MacInnes and myself undertook a huge project for Historic Scotland: to faithfully re-create 54 decorative heraldic stained glass medallions to fit inside the Royal Apartments in Stirling Castle, as they might have looked in 1543. No original glass existed, so we traveled to Lorraine in France, to research original “Guise” glass, and find a contemporary plain lead glazing pattern which would have been familiar to Mary of Guise and King James V (Parents of Mary Queen of Scots).

The level of detail within each panel copied early 16th century medallions in the Burrell Collection, the V&A in London, and throughout North Eastern France. No part of any window was “invented”, but rather copied exactly, and approved by Historic Scotland Architects and the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh.
